Salmon Poetry

Seduced by April

Marie Cadden

Squash a strawberry on the tongue,
plop another in a spray of bubbles
and smile for these freckled days
of unexpected heat.

Yesterday the sun unbuttoned
us to the pelt, armpits gasping,
knees shy, toes squinting
in outrageous light.

Today unzips in slow-motion,
flesh released barefaced
into the sweaty here and now.
A pagan queen leads us astray

for this feckless moment,
wrists dangling from a hammock,
ankles daisy-chained to the sky.
Our forgotten god bides his time.
